Before the lonely floating leaf cascades over the falls, it has potential energy. But once gravity takes it, kinetic energy reigns. I have so many irons in the fire but they are all potentials. Will I get the house? Will the committees chose me to speak at two separate but no less meaningful events? Will the man I'm seeing see the potential in me? Will I find the strength I need to get to where I want to be in general?
None of these define me and most are out of my control, so I will focus on the details that will add up to a well-lived life.
First up: expand the mind. I went to a PechaKucha in Biddeford last week. The topics were varied but intriguing. I left work a little early in order to go walking on my favorite beach, just north of Ferry Beach State Park. I fell in love with this stretch when I worked at The Ecology School at Ferry Beach in 2011. I've found many a Moon Snail here and even made a draft stopper with sand taken from here. The evening was mostly dark and the stars were staring to show. I could see a lighthouse far out to my right blinking first green, then white. The rocks that are uncovered at low tide were half buried in surf but there wasn't enough light to see if any creatures were out. I took a very long walk up and down the sand and saw patches of snow nestled in the nooks left behind by both wind and feet.
It was time to get some grub before the event so I drove into Biddeford, planning to eat at a long-loved Thai restaurant. It was here that I met the man who had a hand with me staying in Maine, to whom I will be forever grateful. I didn't stay to eat my beloved yellow curry though as the menu items have skyrocketed since their restaurant redesign. I settled for a calzone and an Austin Street Six Grain Stout at Portland Pie instead. It was time for the lectures before long and I walked to my car with my leftovers (in a self-brought to-go container!). On the way back to the venue, I really studied the old mill I had parked next to. What history. The building is like an old Oak tree; I just put my hands on it and I wondered what it has seen.
Next, expand my heart: I went to another Ballroom Thieves show Thursday night. This one had more kinetic energy in one square foot of the room than the show at Camden Opera Houses did. You could feel the emotion created by the songs they sang flooding the room. They played all the songs that move me and I sang to each one as it resonated through my body. Before the show, I met a friend at Rising Tide Brewing Company's abandoned buildings photo exhibit opening. We ordered a flight of Pisces gose, Ursa Minor weizen stout, a forgotten-named spiced stout and D'hiver American warehouse ale (whatever that means). All were delicious, though the tart and salty gose will always be my favorite, even though its a summery brew. It was time to head to dinner before the concert to we chose Empire for all the obvious reasons: mind-blowingly good food. Green beans, spring rolls, walnut shrimp and pork buns were ordered with Bar Harbor Real Ale and a Shanghai Cowboy to accompany all. If only all food tasted this good.
Then, test my muscles to combat growing my waistline and preparation for a new life partner: Bootcamp classes and a new tattoo scheduled for Wednesday! To be clear, the tattoo is the new life partner. Stay tuned, it's going to be epic. #loftygoals. Biking to bootcamp in the winter is made much easier by this lack of snow but it makes cross-country skiing a little more difficult. I'd rather have the snow...
Finally, expand the future: 1. Put an offer on a house and 2. Put yourself out there. Third time is the charm right? For the house that is. Keep your fingers crossed for me! As for putting yourself out there, this has many presentations, whether you are deciding where to watch the Super Bowl alone or applying to speak at a PK event. All TBD but they all have kinetic potential...
